Project Title: Senior helping Seniors-the Montessori way

What is the issue?

Seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia can become isolated and lack stimulation, leading to behaviours that can be difficult to manage.

What did we do?

Well senior volunteers visited seniors with dementia on a biweekly basis to engage them in real-life activities according to the adult Montessori approach. We provided monthly training sessions for the volunteers to ensure they were familiar with the Montessori approach, which encourages elderly people to be independent for as long as possible, offer choices, and treat people with dignity and respect.

What did we find?

In total, 150 older adults with dementia and 250 caregivers participated in the activities. The older adults with dementia experienced more stimulation and less isolation. Volunteers experienced a better sense of belonging in the community and increased self-esteem.
