Taipei is strengthening its role as a healthcare innovation hub through new partnerships with Japan’s Kansai region. Led by StartUP@Taipei and the Taipei City Government, a delegation of 15 technology companies recently visited Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto to showcase innovations spanning AI-assisted diagnosis, cancer care, precision medicine, older adult care, mental health, drug discovery, and cell therapy. The initiative aims to build long-term collaboration between the two regions rather than support individual, one-off projects.
The participating companies highlighted a range of solutions already demonstrating real-world impact. These included AI-powered diagnostic tools deployed in hospitals, technologies supporting cancer detection and personalized medicine, and innovations designed to address the needs of aging populations, such as fall-risk prediction, home care support, dementia prevention, and AI-enabled mental health services. Several companies have already established partnerships, clinical validation projects, or commercial operations in Japan, reflecting growing opportunities for cross-border collaboration.
The visit also underscored the complementary strengths of both regions. Kansai offers a mature ecosystem of universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and investors, while Taipei brings expertise in AI, biotechnology, and health technology innovation. Stakeholders from both regions expressed interest in expanding collaborations in clinical research, technology commercialization, and investment, with the goal of accelerating healthcare innovation across Asia.
