Suzanne Labarge’s new $20-million gift drives the future of aging research

McMaster University has received a transformative $20 million gift from Chancellor Emerita and alumna Suzanne Labarge to advance healthy aging research. The investment will strengthen two key initiatives within the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA): the Labarge Centre for Mobility in Aging and the MIRA | Dixon Hall Centre. Together, these programs focus on helping older persons remain active, connected, and independent while ensuring research findings translate into real-world impact.

The funding will support research into mobility, a critical factor in healthy aging, while also advancing community-based research with underserved and equity-deserving populations. Researchers will leverage emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, to better understand mobility decline, identify risks earlier, and develop personalized approaches that support aging well.

This latest contribution brings Labarge’s total support for McMaster to more than $62 million, building on decades of philanthropic investment in aging research. The gift reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that evidence, innovation, and lived experience come together to improve the lives of older persons, caregivers, health-care providers, and communities.
