Some adult vaccines are linked to lower dementia risk. Can they promote brain health?

Emerging research suggests that certain adult vaccines may be associated with a lower risk of dementia, adding to growing interest in the connection between immune health and brain health. Studies examining influenza, shingles, and tuberculosis (BCG) vaccines have found links between vaccination and reduced rates of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, though researchers emphasize that these findings show associations rather than cause-and-effect relationships.

One study found that receiving the influenza vaccine over multiple years was associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, with longer-term vaccination linked to greater observed benefits. Additional research on the recombinant shingles vaccine found a lower relative risk of dementia among vaccinated individuals, while early studies on the BCG vaccine suggest it may influence immune activity within the central nervous system. Researchers believe these effects may be related to how vaccines interact with and regulate the body's immune response.

While the mechanisms behind these findings remain unclear and further clinical research is needed, the studies point to a promising area of investigation in dementia prevention. Researchers are now exploring whether the protective effects are specific to certain vaccines or reflect broader benefits of immune system modulation.
