The World Health Organization (WHO) has released the second edition of its Risk Reduction of Cognitive Decline and Dementia Guidelines, providing updated, evidence-based recommendations to help reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. The guidelines are intended to support health-care providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders in strengthening dementia prevention efforts, particularly as no widely available cure for dementia currently exists.
Building on the 2019 guidelines, the updated publication reflects significant advances in research and expands recommendations related to healthy lifestyle behaviours and the management of health conditions linked to dementia risk. The new guidance also introduces recommendations for reducing exposure to environmental risk factors and implementing tailored, multidomain interventions that address multiple risk factors simultaneously.
The guidelines are designed to help countries integrate dementia risk reduction into health policies, services, and programs while identifying areas where further research is needed. By promoting preventive strategies across the life course, WHO aims to support healthier aging and reduce the global burden of dementia.
