Radical Ventures Starts $1 Billion VC Fund, Canada’s Biggest

Toronto-based Radical Ventures has launched the Radical Breakouts Fund, securing more than US$1 billion in commitments at its first close, making it the largest venture capital fund in Canadian history. Backed by major Canadian pension funds and financial institutions, the fund is designed to support AI companies as they scale into global leaders, providing access to the large pools of capital that have historically been more available in the United States.

The fund reflects growing confidence in Canada's AI ecosystem and aims to help promising companies remain and grow in Canada rather than seeking late-stage funding abroad. Radical Ventures, an early investor in companies such as Cohere, Waabi, Xanadu, and Aspect Biosystems, says the new strategy will allow it to continue backing high-growth AI ventures through later stages of development while helping keep economic returns and innovation within Canada.

The announcement was made during the inaugural Canada Investment Summit in Toronto and highlights the increasing role of Canadian institutional investors in supporting homegrown technology champions. According to Radical Ventures, the fund is intended to help AI scaleups compete globally while strengthening Canada's position as a leader in artificial intelligence and deep technology.
