Prime Minister Carney launches new National Council on Artificial Intelligence

Canada is taking a new step in shaping the future of artificial intelligence. On October 2, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the launch of the National Council on Artificial Intelligence, an advisory body that will help guide the federal government's AI for All strategy. The council brings together leading researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, technology leaders, and public sector experts to provide independent advice on Canada's AI transformation.

The council will advise on key priorities including accelerating AI adoption, supporting the growth of Canadian AI companies, strengthening sovereign AI infrastructure, improving AI safety, and helping ensure that Canadians benefit from the opportunities AI creates. The initiative is part of Canada's broader effort to build trust in AI, expand opportunities for Canadians, and reinforce the country's leadership and sovereignty in this rapidly evolving field.

Members include prominent figures from across Canada's AI ecosystem, such as Yoshua Bengio, Sanja Fidler, Ajay Agrawal, Michelle Zatlyn, Valérie Pisano, and other leaders from business, research, and government. Together, they will help inform policies and initiatives aimed at turning Canadian innovation into stronger companies, better public services, economic growth, and quality jobs.
