The Government of Canada has announced an investment of up to $162 million over five years to support 10,000 AI-related work placements for post-secondary students, recent graduates, and post-doctoral fellows through Mitacs. The initiative aims to help young Canadians gain practical AI skills and work experience while supporting businesses in adopting and commercializing AI technologies.
The funding is part of Canada's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All, which seeks to build a strong domestic AI talent pipeline and create up to 90,000 AI-related job and work placement opportunities by 2031. By connecting emerging talent with organizations across the country, the program is designed to help businesses identify practical uses for AI, improve productivity, and strengthen Canada's competitiveness in an increasingly AI-driven economy.
Through the Mitacs AI Advantage program, organizations will be able to access talent and expertise through two streams: ADOPT, focused on helping businesses test and implement AI solutions, and AI+X, which supports AI-driven research and innovation across sectors such as healthcare and agriculture. The initiative aims to provide valuable hands-on experience for young Canadians while accelerating AI adoption and innovation nationwide.
