Ontario Expanding Access to Dementia Care in Long-Term Care Homes

Industry News Dementia Care |

The Ontario government is investing nearly $13 million to expand dementia care supports in long-term care homes across the province. Through the expansion of the Improving Dementia Care Program (IDCP), 13 additional long-term care homes will gain access to specialized, emotion-based approaches to care, helping up to 1,300 more residents living with dementia receive personalized support that prioritizes their well-being, relationships, and quality of life.

The province is also investing $9.82 million annually to fund up to 153 behavioural specialized unit (BSU) beds in five long-term care homes. These units provide person-centred care tailored to residents' physical, emotional, and cultural needs, helping more people receive specialized dementia care in long-term care settings rather than hospitals.

Building on a pilot launched in 2025, the expanded program will bring the total number of participating homes to 30, with plans to reach 50 homes by 2027-28. The investment reflects Ontario's broader efforts to strengthen long-term care and improve quality of life for residents living with dementia, as well as support caregivers, families, and frontline staff.
