Lived Experience Council
CABHI’s Lived Experience Council is a representative group of older persons and caregivers who ensure that CABHI’s work is informed by real lived experience. They participate in end‑user engagement activities across CABHI and help ensure end-user perspectives meaningfully shape CABHI’s priorities, programs, and community.

Adele Ostfield
Adele Ostfield
Adele was Vice President of Human Resources for an international pet food and supplies distributor. Upon retiring from that position in 1999, she resumed a prior career as Human Resources and General Business Consultant. Adele finds joy in aging and advocating for a positive outlook towards growing older. Since fully retiring at the end of 2019, she has been able to indulge her passion for technology becoming a very active volunteer assisting older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment use technology to enhance their lives. She is committed to exploring innovative ideas and solutions that enable all people to age in place and live a full and meaningful life.

Beverley Shukyn
Beverley Shukyn
Beverley Shukyn holds an MA in Sociology and has worked in Social Services in the areas of addictions, mental health, employment programs, and back‑to‑work facilitation within Health and Wellness programs. She brings personal lived experience through overseeing caregiving for her mother, and she has a strong interest in aging in a proactive way and in maximizing brain health.

Deborah Bernstein
Deborah Bernstein
Deborah Bernstein began volunteering after a career in the Canadian film and television industry. She has volunteered with CABHI since 2018. She has also volunteered with the Hot Docs Advisory Committee, the AFC, Baycrest and Ve’ahvta. Deborah holds a doctorate (Ed.D.) in Applied Psychology from the University of Toronto. -
Helen Storm
Helen Storm
Helen Storm's career and volunteer work showcase a deep commitment to education, technology, and community service. After dedicating 25 years to the York Region District School Board, where she played a pivotal role in supporting special needs students and enhancing literacy and numeracy through various initiatives, Helen transitioned to retirement with a continued passion for learning and helping others.
At the LIFE Institute of Toronto Metropolitan University, Helen not only engaged in personal enrichment through various courses but also took on leadership roles, such as organizing the Investment Club and coordinating the Camera Club. Her commitment to fostering community extended to her volunteer work at Baycrest, where she provided crucial tech support, especially during the challenging times of COVID-19.
Even while travelling, Helen has remained active in supporting Baycrest's online programs and has further enriched her involvement in the local community by serving as president of a local camera club. Her continued dedication to photography, teaching, and community service highlights her lifelong enthusiasm for both learning, sharing knowledge and helping others. -
Hilary Randall-Grace
Hilary Randall-Grace
Hilary Randall-Grace is a retired professional accountant with a passion for the elderly. Her professional career spanned close to 40 years in Quality & Cultural, Strategic, and Operational Risk Management Consulting, as well as in Internal Audit, Compliance, and Governance. Latterly as Director, Quality and Risk Management at Deloitte Canada she was responsible for the firm’s in Ethics, Client Service, Policy Administration, Training and Compliance.
As an only child, Hilary experienced the complex and emotional challenges of caregiving while looking after her parents (one with dementia, the other with physical decline) for eight years while working and raising a family. Upon retirement, Hilary obtained a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology (with Honours) and has since devoted her time to volunteer activities relating to older adults with dementia and ageing. She currently volunteers as a Facilitator, Spousal and Adult Children Caregiver Support Groups for the Alzheimer Society of Toronto. She is actively involved with the Centre for Aging & Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), Baycrest Senior Advisory Panel. Prior to COVID, Hilary led recreation one day a week at local long term care facilities, including Belmont House and Christie Gardens (Adopter of the Eden Philosophy).
Hilary is married with one son and loves dogs, travelling, cooking, and gardening. -
Ian Goldman
Ian Goldman
Ian Goldman worked as an I.T. business analyst for Sanofi Pasteur until 2010, where he coordinated teams of scientists and technologists in evaluating and deploying software to improve processes. Born in Leeds, UK Ian “distance managed” care to his Mum for 8 years, liaising with a range of dementia care providers. Ian’s volunteer experience includes working in various senior centres and tutoring clients with a range of tech literacy on how to use devices and apps. This enables seniors to stay connected with their family and continue pursuing their interests.
Ian has also acted as a co-facilitator for the Minds in Motion program for Alzheimer’s Society Toronto, providing both physical and mental exercises for people living with a dementia diagnosis, and their care partners, in a social setting. Since 2016, Ian has provided lived experience to several research and innovation projects, for technologies that aim to improve ageing and caregiving, and has collaborated virtually with groups across Canada.
Ian loves to travel, learn, and share his insights with those that he works alongside. He holds a degree in Natural Sciences for Chemical Engineering from Cambridge University. -
Laurie Bernick
Laurie Bernick
Laurie’s passion for understanding and supporting adults and their families/caregivers to optimize the experience of aging and their quality of life was central to her career as an advanced practice nurse/ Nurse Practitioner in geriatrics. She enjoyed teaching as an Assistant Lecturer at York University and held an Adjunct Lecturer appointment with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto. She holds a BScN from Queen’s University, a MScN from the University of Western Ontario and a Nurse Practitioner certificate from the University of Toronto. She hopes to bring her professional and personal care experiences to the panel and to learn about innovations that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults and their community.
