Empowering caregivers with innovation

May is Caregiver Month, so we’re taking a moment to recognize the people who do this essential work and showcase how innovation is making caregivers’ lives easier across Canada.

Caregiver Support and Care Coordination + Navigation are two of six innovation themes that CABHI focuses on when selecting projects to fund and accelerate.

  • Caregiver Support

Solutions that offer practical tools, training, and resources to lessen the load of everyday caregiving, ultimately helping caregivers protect their own well-being while supporting those in their care.

  • Care Coordination + Navigation

Solutions that provide guidance to older persons and thei caregivers, helping them find the right care at the right time, understand what’s available, and move through a complex system with more confidence.

It’s no secret that Canadian caregivers are critical not only in providing care to older persons, but also in protecting our economy: the cost of unpaid caregiving, if shifted to paid services, would be valued at up to $112.7 billion annually. With healthcare resources stretched to the point of breaking, caregivers are on the front lines, keeping older persons out of acute care (which puts them at increased dementia risk) and preserving critical capacity in both hospitals and long-term care. The burden and toll on caregivers are well-documented, with an increasing number experiencing burnout and being pushed out of the workforce to provide care to loved ones in need. Common challenges they face include navigating services, coordinating care, and accessing information—all pain points that are being addressed by innovative solutions from homegrown researchers and startups.

Our Caregiver Support theme accelerates solutions that offer practical tools, training, and resources to lessen the load of everyday caregiving, ultimately helping caregivers protect their own well-being while supporting those in their care.

Our Care Coordination + Navigation theme provides guidance that helps people find the right care at the right time, understand what’s available, and move through a complex system with more confidence.

Together, these 2 themes ensure that we’re driving innovations that meet the urgent and complex needs of Canadian caregivers and the older persons they support—including those living with cognitive decline and dementia.

Families caring for loved ones can face major barriers to care, such as distance—whether across the city, across provinces, or even across countries—and day-to-day scheduling, whether for standing appointments or daily tasks. When caregiving means being in two places at once, reliable in-home support can change the lives of caregivers and those in their care.

Tuktu is redefining home and community care for older persons through personalized, relationship-centred support grounded in professional expertise and compassion. With over 3,000 vetted community members, Tuktu matches local care providers to like-minded older persons in need of support, companionship, and care. With services ranging from companionship to mobility assistance, help at home, and specialized services (overnight care, dementia care, etc.), Tuktu ensures older persons have access to the care they need while living independently, easing concerns for them and their families.

Concerns among family caregivers—especially when supporting a loved one dealing with cognitive decline—often occur, and questions regarding dementia specifically can pop up frequently.

Another CABHI-supported caregiver support solution, Factually Health, provides 24/7, frictionless access to factual dementia knowledge and practical caregiving insights. By making evidence-informed guidance easier to reach, the solution helps caregivers feel more prepared and supported.

Caregivers also face frequent challenges navigating complex care systems, which is where solutions like ConSoul and blueBell Connect come in.

ConSoul is a caregiving and care-navigation benefit designed to support caregivers balancing careers. With the integrated ability to manage eldercare, chronic conditions, mental health challenges, and complex family health needs—along with human guidance—ConSoul helps people coordinate support, navigate care systems, and access benefits with ease.

blueBell Connect is a dementia care coordination platform designed to bring caregivers together in one secure, intelligent space. By connecting family members, friends, and healthcare professionals, the platform helps care teams coordinate support, share real-time updates, and access personalized recommendations that are clinically informed, individually tailored, and culturally appropriate.

Caregiving is essential work, and it shouldn’t have to be done alone. CABHI is proud to drive innovations that make it easier to find information, coordinate services, and access practical, day-to-day help, so caregivers can focus on what matters most: being there for the people they love while protecting their own well-being. By investing in solutions across our Caregiver Support and Care Coordination + Navigation innovation themes, we’re helping build a more connected, confident and sustainable caregiving experience.
